ISBA COMMITTEE, COMMISSION AND SECTION APPLICATIONS

In the next several weeks as Bar Association President-Elect, I will be making the appointments to the various Committees, Section Councils, and Boards of the Association for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2005. The applications linked to this publication are an opportunity for you to apply for a position. Use these links to view descriptive paragraphs for most committees and sections.

Section Council appointments are for a term of three years, one third of each Council being replaced every year. Retiring Council members are not eligible for reappointment until they have been off the Council for one year. However, if you are a retiring Council member, you may apply for another Council of which you are a section member or any Committee or Commission.

Commission appointments have specific terms and vacancies are filled accordingly.

For your convenience, use these links to access the Section, Committee or Commission.

You will note on each application form that the requested information regarding gender, age and ethnic background is optional. The Bylaws of the Association provide that Committee, Board and Section Council appointments should be made after taking these factors into consideration, as well as geographic location and the nature of your practice. My goal is to make the membership of each Committee, Board and Section Council as nearly representative of the membership of the Association as possible based upon these factors. To that end, I urge you to provide the optional information. If there is any other information that you would like to submit with your application, please feel free to do so.

If you have applied in the past, but have not been appointed, please apply again. Every year is a new opportunity! The volunteers who serve on Committees, Boards and Section Councils are the lifeblood of our Association.

Please note the March 21st deadline for the return of your application!

STATE DELEGATE TO AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION (ABA)

Congratulations to David L. Brown, Des Moines, who was recently elected as the incoming State Delegate from Iowa to the ABA. The term of the current State Delegate, David Funkhouser, Mason City, expires at the conclusion of the August 2005 ABA Annual Meeting at which time David L. Brown assumes his role as State Delegate.

BAR ASSOCIATION DELEGATE TO ABA

The Iowa State Bar Association is entitled to two State Bar Association Delegates in addition to the State Delegate position to which David L. Brown was recently selected. The Iowa State Bar Association Board of Governors (BOG) at its March 8, 2005 quarterly meeting will nominate one or more bar association members for the office of State Bar Association Delegate to the ABA. The BOG nominations will be for one of the two State Bar Association Delegate positions. The bar association member selected as State Bar Association Delegate will begin her/his two year term after the August 2005 ABA Annual Meeting. If interested in being nominated by a member of the BOG, you are encouraged to visit with one or more of the Governors of the ISBA who are listed by judicial election district on the table of contents page of the monthly Iowa Lawyer magazine.

Bridge the Gap Goes MP3

May 5-6, 2005
Downtown Marriott Hotel, Des Moines, Iowa

Bridge the Gap has jumped into the digital music format and to celebrate we'll be giving away a total of 2 Apple iPod minis and one DVD player to 3 lucky winners. Just like an MP3 player allows you to store all your favorite songs in one convenient location, Bridge the Gap allows you to obtain all your State, Federal and Ethics CLE credits at one seminar. This year's topics include Video Depositions, Proposed Ethics Rules, Business Entity Selection, Cross Examination, Drug Court, Probate Primer, and Ethics Jeopardy. Speakers include Judge Ross Walters, Pat Roby, Judge Linda Reade, Judge Eliza Ovrom, Eric Lam, Justice Michael Streit, and Judge Larry Eisenhauer. As always, the Seminar will be held in Des Moines at the Downtown Marriott. So clear May 5th and 6th on your calendar and plan to be in Des Moines to attend Bridge the Gap.
